Bison History...

The buffalo has inhabited most of North America for hundreds of years.

In the pre-1800's, the estimates of the numbers of bison ranged from 60 million to 120 million...with 10 to 15 million in the area known as Kansas. If the upper estimates are accurate, the bison was at one time the most numerous of any large mammal on the face of the Earth.

The demise of the huge herds occured largely durring the 1800's at the hands of hunters who engaged in wholesale slaughter. Often only the tounge, liver and hide were taked, leaving the rest to rot on the plains.

It is reported that, by the turn of the century, only 22 bison could be found in the United States. A few conscientious ranchers took it upon themselves to save the buffalo from total extinction.

From near extinction in the 1900's to over 300,000 animals today, the bison has made a dramatic comeback as a result of efforts made by dedicated individuals, private ranchers, Native Americans, and conservationists, the buffalo is no longer an endangered animal.

Buffalo numbers are growing by twenty percent a year and will reach a million animals in ten years. The average herd size is less than 100 animals, and they are found in all 50 states and in all Canadian provinces.

Long known as an alternative livestock, bison are now moving into mainstream agriculture. They are regulated the same as cattle by states and the federal government. Possibly the most important factor of the bison meat industry is that it is producer controlled.
